Geographic Information System (GIS) is vital for defense. The concept of command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, C4ISR is entirely dependent on geospatial technology for spatial information. GIS is an excellent tool for military commanders during operations to visually monitoring possible terrorist activity. IGiS is useful since it comes with an integrated set of applications that are specifically developed for the military domain and provides a wide range of customized geospatial processing capabilities. GIS allows military land and facilities managers to reduce base operation and maintenance costs, improve mission effectiveness, provide rapid modeling capabilities to analyzing alternative strategies, to improve communication and to store institutional knowledge.
IGiS is being used effectively and efficiently, following features have been developed as per the requirements of Defense;
DGN feature of IGiS supports version 7 and 8. It displays the data accurately with actual symbology and annotation. It is capable of reading both primary as well secondary data. It supports MIL Symbology& NATO APP6A/Mil Std. 2525B, Support of Raster and Vector Symbology (BMP, JPG, GIF, PNG, TTF, WMF, EMF etc.). It can also generate DEM using contours height from DGN.
IGiS for Terrain analysis;
IGiS provides automated assistance to military forces terrain analysis function. IGiS has the capability to receive, reformat, create, store, retrieve, update, manipulate and condense digital terrain data to produce terrain analysis products such as; modified combined obstacle overlays, hydrology overlays, and slope maps, on and off road mobility maps, line-of-sight plots, concealment maps and possible problems associated lines of communication. With the help of terrain analysis, view shed analysis, finding the best path, slope, route visibility can also be determined.
Advance Change Detection:
GIS provides assistance to the military forces with the help of its change detection module. IGiS is capable of detecting changes base on multi dated, multi resolution, multi spectral, different projection and different sensor images. Change detection is also used to track movement of enemy assets and creation of new assets like airfields, docks, missile sites and bunkers.
IGiS has the facility to find the mobility corridors using, slope, landuse, visibility, soil characteristics, geology, etc. IGiS is able to do costing of various terrain features and identify the least cost path between source and destination. It comprises of distance tools such as;

IGiS Network analysis enables military troops to find the shortest path, identify the most productive and efficient path for multi-location. While doing this it also allows setting location priority and defining network rules. It also provides location and allocation for locating the closest facility. It further creates network using the existing GIS data.
Tracking analyst is one such feature in IGiS which enables time series visualization of GIS data. It analyses information relative to time and location. Based on the available data it creates visible time and path. It also views complex time patterns and spatial patterns, visualizes the change over time, symbolizes the age of data and also analysis the historical and real time data.
IGiS data model supports 3D geometry and topology for extended spatial analysis and facilitating interactive visualization. This feature enables to create 3D directly using DEM and GIS data. It has seamless navigation, it calculates Surface Area, Volume, Slope, Aspect, and hill shade. It can also generate contour. It can change the view of battlefield area by, orientation, altitude, look angle, level of zoom. It has special effects like, Sky, Fog, Clouds, Sun, Moon, Stars, Water, Fire and Almanac Moon Phase.
